A Parent’s Guide to VSB Digital Resources at McBride Elementary

As McBride families, you might be wondering what your child can access online using their student email account. The Vancouver School Board provides a wealth of digital tools and resources to support learning both at school and at home. Here’s everything you need to know!

Your Child’s Student Email

Your child has a VSB student email account that follows this format: studentnumber@learn.vsb.bc.ca (for example, 12345@learn.vsb.bc.ca). This is the same login they use on school computers, and it’s the key to accessing all their digital learning tools.

Microsoft 365: The Learning Hub

When your child signs into Office 365 with their student email, they gain access to a full suite of Microsoft applications:

Microsoft Teams is the primary platform teachers use for classroom learning. Through Teams, students can:

  • Join virtual classrooms
  • Access assignments and learning materials
  • Collaborate with classmates
  • Communicate with teachers

Office Applications include:

  • Microsoft Word for writing projects
  • Excel for data and math activities
  • PowerPoint for presentations
  • OneNote for digital note-taking
  • OneDrive for storing files in the cloud

Bonus: Students can download and install Microsoft Office software on personally-owned computers and mobile devices at home, giving them access to these powerful tools for homework and projects.

VSB Digital Library

The Vancouver School Board provides all students with access to a comprehensive digital library at library.vsb.bc.ca. This collection includes:

  • World Book Online
  • The Canadian Encyclopedia
  • Science Power
  • BookFLIX
  • National Geographic
  • And many more educational resources!

These databases support research projects, homework, and curiosity-driven exploration across all subject areas.

MyEducation BC Student Portal

Through MyEducation BC, both parents and students can access important educational information including:

  • Student PEN (Personal Education Number)
  • Course schedules
  • Daily attendance records
  • Published report cards

This secure platform keeps you connected to your child’s academic progress.

Need Help with Passwords?

If your child forgets their password, they can use the student self-serve password reset tool at https://studentpass.vsb.bc.ca/. They’ll need their PEN and date of birth to reset their password.

Getting Started at Home

To help your child access these resources from home:

  1. Make sure you have their student email address (student number + @learn.vsb.bc.ca)
  2. Ensure they know their password (or use the reset tool if needed)
  3. Visit office.com to access Microsoft 365
  4. Bookmark library.vsb.bc.ca for easy access to library resources

Questions?

If you have questions about your child’s digital access or need technical support, please reach out to the McBride office or contact VSB’s IT support.

These digital tools are designed to enhance learning and provide students with the resources they need to succeed. Encourage your child to explore these platforms and make the most of the educational opportunities available to them!

šŸ’»McBride Direct Ask Appeal: Bringing Technology to Our Classrooms

We’re excited to announce the launch of the McBride Direct Ask Appeal, a major technology initiative that will transform learning opportunities for our students.

Help Us Bring 30 Laptops to McBride

As a school community, McBride has always come together to give our children the best possible learning opportunities. Today, we have an important chance to take a meaningful step forward for our students’ future.

Right now, McBride does not have laptops or computers available for student use. In a world where digital literacy is essential, this gap limits what our children can explore, create, and achieve. The McBride PAC is launching this campaign to bridge that gap.

Our Goal: $40,000

This campaign will fund:

  • 30 durable, education-ready laptops @ $1,200 each — $36,000
  • Secure laptop cart — $2,000
  • Accessories (headphones, mice, charging, etc.) — $2,000

Total Goal: $40,000

These resources will allow McBride students and teachers to engage fully in learning experiences that are interactive, collaborative, and aligned with the skills needed in today’s world.

Why This Matters

Digital access is no longer optional—it’s foundational to modern education.

For Students

  • Hands-on access to technology helps children research, collaborate, design, code, and create
  • Builds confidence and early digital literacy skills that set them up for success
  • Ensures equal access to tools every child needs, regardless of background

For Teachers

  • Technology allows teachers to integrate interactive and engaging learning experiences
  • Opens the door to blended learning, multimedia projects, science and math applications, and more

For Our Community

This project represents an investment in every child at McBride. When we close the technology gap, we open opportunities—for all students.
